This body of work represents an interest in religious syncretism and Mexican Catholicism. I am intrigued with the various ways in which a religious fusion or mix resulted when indigenous and Christian practices collided in Mesoamerica in the sixteenth century. By looking at religious syncretism, I am discovering similarities that exist today in the struggle to maintain a Chicano/a identity. The indigenous people successfully combined various Catholic elements with their religious beliefs in ways similar to how Chicanos have now adapted and blended their Mexican and American heritages in order to maintain their ethnicity, in the process creating a new cultural hybrid. I use the concept of religious syncretism as a metaphor to explore a Chicano identity.
