As an individual and as a member of a community, I have struggled to define myself as well as to define my community. My goal is to record through the painted image my community, the environment, and the iconography, and to find myself. I define Chicano art by producing it. I define the community through the individual, and I invest myself in those moments that I share as part of that quest. Often it is the portrait that remains as a document of that moment; it’s hard to stereotype or make generalities about a people when you can look into their eyes and see the humanity present.
