Like other artists who had to overcome obstacles to achieve careers in the arts, Sam Coronado has not only built a niche for himself but has made a point of helping others to achieve the same goals. His childhood was marked by an early interest in art; in later years he recalled watching his mother and grandmother working at embroidery and crocheting and being inspired to creative endeavors himself. Those early drawing and painting activities were maintained throughout his childhood and adolescence. After serving in the U.S. Army, Coronado studied at El Centro College in Dallas and then at the University of Texas, Austin, receiving his B.F.A., with an emphasis on studio art, in 1975. At that time and for years thereafter, Coronado specialized in painting. A visit to Self-Help Graphics in Los Angeles in 1990 changed his direction in two ways: he developed a strong interest in printmaking, and he was inspired to take on an ambitious public-service effort. The Serie Project, based on the model of Self-Help Graphics, began in 1993 and has continued since then, encouraging budding artists by providing them with studio space, materials, and guidance to develop their projects. Along with this important activity on behalf of others, Coronado has continued to produce his own works.
